North York Moors

This weekend saw bad weather everywhere except for where we were staying! The journey was long, at least the same length as to the Lakes, particularly for the second Vito which took at minor detour along the M6 Toll and then the surrounding countryside trying to get back onto the M42. Owen was shocked to see how close we were to Middlesborough and wasn’t shy about telling me. The hut was a YHA one and very nice, although any later in the year it would be quite cold. Alexander celebrated his birthday on the Sunday and got out his bagpipes to mark the occasion at midnight on Saturday.
The majority of the group got in two days of climbing at Wainstones and Scugdale Baker’s Crag. The weather was sunny and a few people even started to lead! I’m told the two walking groups had excellent days out, one ending in a tea shop/pub for several hours!
Considering that the club has not been to this area of the country before, the trip was well received and some members have asked that it be repeated again in the coming years.

From farmhouse, walk east across fields (without getting electrocuted!) to track and follow to main road. Head east into Kildale and continue on road north towards woods. After approx 1km, follow track into woods and follow track through to open moorland to Captain Cooks Monument. From monument, head north to open moorland and head east for approx 2km to Percy Cross Rigg and follow paved track south to main road. Follow road back into Kildale (enjoy a cup of tea at local team room!) and then head back to bunk house.
